It was great to see so many of you this weekend at The Mac. For those who were unable to attend, here is a quick summary of the events of Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, our men’s first division team hosted Velox/Westshore in an exciting game filled with multiple lead changes and ample scoring. The visitors struck first after sustained early possession, jumping into a 7-0 lead following a nice break and offload by their scrum half 8 minutes into the game. The Bays responded quickly with their own try coming from a Mitch Soares chip kick gathered in by big Mike Neuwenhuysen. The successful convert knotted the score. A try by MearesCat moments later gave JBAA a short-lived 14-7 lead which was quickly negated by another Westshore try, evening the score once again. The half ended with a big tackle by the home team’s Ryan Boothroyd thwarting another visitor’s attack.
The second saw the lead seesaw back and forth with the Bays scoring twice before Westshore battled back with their third try of the match. Another Bays’ tally seemed to seal the deal giving the home team a 29-21 lead with a scant 10 minutes remaining in the game. With both teams substituting liberally the tempo of the game never waned. Westshore fought back valiantly and were rewarded with a try as time wound down, making the score 29-28 for the home team with full time imminent. Amazingly, with any stoppage of play potentially ending the game, the visitors scored again!!! Yikes. The final whistle heralded a Westshore win. Although the result was not what JBAA had hoped for, the game was exciting and there were many positives for both squads.
On Sunday MacDonald Park was swarmed by young players of all ages as our club held Family Day. Practice sessions which integrated seniors with youth, multiple age-grade games against CW, hot dogs , beverages and decent weather made for a fulfilling day for all who were involved. Our u15 girls and u17 boys were particularly impressive on the day.
Thanks to Andrew Moffatt and Dave Ramsay for their leadership, along with support from Terry and Milaine and the White Knight. As usual, Mike de Goede did yeomen work in setting up the field and his brother John reffed and ‘presidented’ like only he can.
