Our fledgling women’s rugby team, coached by Jen Ross, played their first game in many years on Saturday.
Our women’s team played against the Comox Kickers on a field in Cumberland. The squad was driven up-island by former men’s national team Tom Woods. Tom snagged the Esquimalt High School short bus, allegedly bought insurance and apparently has the appropriate licensing as a retired firefighter. His daughter Eliza joined 9 other brave warriors to take on the Kickers in a 10-a-side match.
Although we came out on the short end of a vigorously-contested encounter, by all accounts the gals played a determined and hard-tackling performance. Our team was forced to default the post-game beer-chugging contest as our players are not old enough to legally drink.
Sounds good for the future!!
