Barry has brought us another game report from our triple header home game on Saturday. Note that Lisa will have a detailed game report for the women’s game so look for that to come in the next day or two.
The youthful JBAA women’s team used tenacious defence and outside speed to defeat the visiting Caps by a score of 50-27 in a wide-open end-to-end contest we have come to expect with our women’s team.
In the Premier Reserve game the value of a deep bench became crystal clear as the Bays overcame a 15-20 halftime deficit, going on to defeat PA Black Sheep by a score of 39-34 for the second James Bay win of the day.
During the first half the home team was limited to tries by Dakota LaChance and Craig Mitchell-Hermann, with Craig adding one convert. However, during the second part of the game, the infusion of power subs Shea Wakefield, Jordan Brown, and Jaden Prigione gave the Navy Blue the impetus to outscore The Sheep by 4 tries to 2. Bays’ scorers included Henry Do, Prigione and Greg Raymond. The fourth and final try was particularly impressive; a monster run by Jordan Brown led to a sweet offload to Isahia Harrison who flipped the ball to the hard charging Peter Masimo to touch the ball down. Two Mitchell-Hermann converts rounded out the scoring for a well deserved come-back win of 39-34.
Our Premier Bays took on the high-flying North Shore Capilanos in an action-packed game where the home team was outscored 45-17. The Caps were full-value for the win, demonstrating a well-balanced attack with limited turnovers while the Bays struggled to retain possession at times with turn-overs being costly.
After the Caps pressed for the first few minutes of the opening half, JBAA was able to spring Gio Douyon for the initial score as the Bays jumped into 7-0 lead with the Thomas Burton convert. Ten minutes later the Caps used their patented pick-and-go to tie the score at 7 apiece. An errant Bays’ pass allowed the visitors to jump into a 14-7 lead. On the ensuing flubbed kick-off a heads-up play by JBAA hooker Austin Creighton allowed the home team to regain possession and give Burton a chance for a shot at goal. The successful kick brought the score to 14-10 Caps. A series of quick hands by the visitors off a set scrum allowed them to stretch their lead to 21-10 at the half.
The Caps came out storming in the second half, exploiting every JBAA mistake and were able to score three unanswered tries to gain a 40-10 advantage before Alex Jordan forced a turnover to spring Gio for the final Bays’ score of the game. At 40-17 the game becomes very physical with neither team willing to concede much territory and although the Bays defend valiantly, the Caps are able to add to their total in the final minutes to come away with a convincing 45-17 win.
Next week our Prems will take on the UVic Vikings as they look to slip into the playoffs, needing only one point to do so.
